June 15 is considered World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Elder abuse is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world, and an issue which deserves the attention of the international community.
Bala Vidya Mandir recognises this global issue and invited Dr N.Lakshimathy Ramesh with his team to throw light and create awareness on this issue among students. Dr. Lakshmipathy [MD (Geriatrics)PG DIP.DIAB] is a Senior Consultant Geriatric Physician and Diabetologist at Kauvery hospital, Chennai.

Dr. Lakshmipathy rightly emphasized the fact that older people have the right to a life of dignity in old age, free of all forms of abuse, including financial and material exploitation, which could lead to poverty, hunger, homelessness, compromised health and well-being, and even premature mortality.

He urged students to create awareness regarding the issue among peers and highlighted the importance of respecting elders and that they must help elders enjoy their retired life peacefully and with dignity.

The Principal of Bala Vidya Mandir, Mr. Srinivasa Raghavan pointed out a very important fact that good and respectful behavior towards elders starts first at home. Once students learn to respect their own elders at home, they will realize its importance and pass on these moral values to all around them.

The entire family of Bala Vidya Mandir took an oath to commemorate this day.
